Speech and language evaluation report September 28, 2008

Filed under: Uncategorized — Brandy Young @ 9:57 pm

At his most recent doc. appointment, the doctor asked if he had ever had speech therapy. When I said he hadn’t she was shocked that the school had never referred him to a therapist. So earlier this month Seth had a speech evaluation.

The evaluation went very well! He was able to do it right here at home. The evaluator came here. She was a very nice person. Seth did awesome! He has absolutely no problem reading and understanding. His hearing and vision is perfect. He just has problems with articulation. His problem sounds are s, r, sp, sw, th (voiced), consonant + l (fl, gl) and consonant +r (br, fr).

As I sat and listened to the evaluation, Seth was being asked to repeat sentences. They kept getting harder and harder and I was wondering why the heck she was asking him to repeat these sentences. When she finished that part of it she said to me. “These sentences are used to test people from the ages of 5-21. He did awesome! I never get that far with younger kids!”

I am really excited about this speech therapy! Seth is a very smart kid! He loves to read! He’s in 2nd grade and is already well into the 4th Harry Potter. And the previous three he read in first grade!

He is also a very shy and withdrawn kid…in public situations. I am 100% sure his speech is the reason for this. I am really hoping the therapy will boost his confidence and self-esteem. :)

Below is his report. I found it quite interesting!

Bike ridin’! September 19, 2008

Filed under: Uncategorized — Brandy Young @ 8:32 pm

Chaz came home from work today and fixed my bike…
and the boys have just started really wanting to ride bikes and learning to do it.

Seth went from riding with training wheels all the time to riding on his own completely in two days!

And Corbin has always been kind of scared and never wanted to try. But seeing his little brother do it has given him the determination to do it! He made it from our driveway down to the end of our circle!  Soon he’ll be cruisin’ around too!
IMG_2526 IMG_2504

Ashlyn loves to ride around on her mangled Ariel bike!  She can get around pretty good! It’s mangled because twice she has left it behind daddy’s truck and it has been run over but still works good!
IMG_2545 IMG_2479

Sage pushes herself around on her little trike and somehow manages to keep up with everyone!

My view from the bike! :)

And Chaz lookin’ hot on his bike! :) He had to show the kids how it’s done! lol!

Spike! September 18, 2008

Filed under: Uncategorized — Brandy Young @ 8:17 pm

Corbin has been a very busy boy this year.  His school started a program call the 21st Century Learning Center.  They offer after school tutoring for a few subjects and lots of fun classes too! Corbin wanted to do several classes.  He was in Drama Club last year so of course he had to continue with that!!  He also chose Science Club and Chess Club.  These are all after school so Monday’s he is at school from 8-4:30…Wednesday’s 8-4:30 and then Cub Scouts 6:30-7:30…and Thursday’s 8-5:15!  His days are cram packed!

The Drama Club will be putting on a play in November. Today we found out he landed one of the lead roles in the play!  He will play one of the BAD guys, Spike! He’s very excited and does a great job! He’s very expressive and makes a great actor!

I will have to go drop in on his classes and get pics of him doing his different activities!

Oh and due to his role in the play he will have to stop going to Chess Club until after the play.  Which he is a little bummed about but he’s more psyched about the play so he’s ok with that for now! :)

Here’s a pic from last year’s play…The Mikado.  He played a noble and only has a few lines so this year will be even more fun and work for him!

Tadpoles, fishies and frogs! Oh My! September 14, 2008

Filed under: Uncategorized — Brandy Young @ 1:47 pm

Yesterday we took the kids down to Fain Park to catch tadpoles. They had been asking to since last week and Saturday we were able to go. It was a nice morning, not too hot just a little warm. I can feel fall sneaking up on us!

It would have been really cool to go a couple weeks ago. You could step next to the shore and hundreds of tadpoles and baby fish would go swimming off. Now there are a LOT less, but there were still plenty for the catching! A couple weeks ago we went and the kids saw a father and daughter there catching tadpoles with a metal strainer and a bucket. So that’s what we took and it worked great!
IMG_2304IMG_2300IMG_2333

With dad’s help the kids managed to catch 2 frogs, two almost frogs, lol they still had tails but had all four legs too, one tadpole with two legs and an tadpole without legs…and I think there were also a couple of tiny fish.

The kids played in the water a little. Sage got soaked up to her waist! We took a short hike up the stream to find more tadpoles and didn’t find much so we decided it was time to go home.IMG_2345IMG_2347IMG_2373IMG_2374IMG_2377IMG_2381
So we walked back to the lake and released everything. That of course didn’t go over well…LOL! Ashlyn grew quite attached to her little tailed frogs. (I think one of them died before we even got back to put them in the lake.) :( She was playing with them quite a bit. As you can see in a couple of the pics.

It was a nice way to spend the morning and got off the coach and out of the house! Something we tend to do WAY too much!

Life cycle of a Tiger Swallowtail… September 13, 2008

Filed under: Uncategorized — Brandy Young @ 4:27 pm

I have been blogging about this on my other blog…
So I decided to do a post here, to show what the kids have been watching and seeing.

I found a Tiger Swallowtail Caterpillar Wednesday, September 10th.  I really wanted the kids to see it so I brought it home.  Of course the kids thought it was so cool! They were even more excited to find out that it would soon be making a chrysalis and we would get to watch it!

The following day it had attached itself to the lid of the terrarium but for a couple days it did nothing else. I was beginning to wonder if it had died.  I have never seen the process so I had no idea what to expect.

This morning I went out to check on it and it still look like it did in the above pics.  We went and spent some time at Fain Park catching tadpoles and walking around.  Then came home and napped.  I decided to go out and check on the caterpillar again and immediately I saw something insect like on the floor of the terrarium.

It just lost it's head!

I had seen pictures of this before so I knew there had been some progress.  Sure enough I looked up to see the caterpillar is now in the process of making it’s chrysalis!  I called the family out to see and they were all excited to see some change!

Ashlyn said “It looks like wood!”  So I explained to her why it looks that way…so with her new knowledge she had to inform the rest of the kids why it looked like wood. :)

Tiger Swallowtail ~ Chrysalis

The caterpillar/butterfly can stay in the chrysalis anywhere from 2-24 weeks.  Since it is almost fall I am kind of wondering if it will be the latter. We are definitely hoping for a shorter time! Either way it will be so cool to watch this strange alien looking thing turn into a beautiful butterfly!

Next year I am going to order one of those kits that let you watch the whole process…I don’t know what kind of caterpillars you get but it would be really neat to see again!

Last night while I was catching up on blog reading… September 8, 2008

I stopped by Melissa Ballard’s blog.

She posted:

“More prayers…

Please pray to comfort Mitchell and Leanna (Blair) Reidhead. Their 10 month old baby boy, Breckon, passed away yesterday. They need comfort.”

Your heart just sinks when you hear news like this.  This morning she emailed with more info on what happened and it left me in tears and reminded how fragile life is.  I hope she doesn’t mind me posting this here.

“Mitchell and Leanna Reidhead’s 10 month old baby boy passed away on Saturday, September 6th.  What I understand after talking to Leanna is that there was a family gathering and all of the kids were in Mitchell’s parents playroom.  They are not exactly sure how it happened because there were no adults in the room.  What they know is from the children telling the story.  Somehow, the TV fell off it’s stand.  Breckon was playing in the movies just under it, and the TV landed on him.  They air evacuated him to the hospital and he passed away in the helicopter on the way.  Mitchell and Leanna seem to be handling it well for now.  She seemed in good spirits when I talked to her earlier today, but it is going to be a long hard road for them, as you can imagine.  They need all of the prayers they can get. They think the funeral will be either on Wednesday or Thursday.  They had not decided yet when I spoke to her, but I will let you know more when I do.  PLEASE KEEP THEM IN YOUR PRAYERS FOR A WHILE.”

Yes…please keep them in your thoughts and prayers.

Ella Enchanted… September 8, 2008

Filed under: Uncategorized — Brandy Young @ 8:53 am

A book review…sorta…

So my visiting teacher…or at least I think she still is…lol…anyway I loaned her my “Prodigal Journey” & “Refining Fire” books.  So she came over to return them and to loan me a couple, Ella Enchanted and Good Omens.  I haven’t started Good Omens yet…maybe I will review it too when I finish it.

I didn’t know Ella Enchanted was a book first but Kim(VT) informed how ridiculous the movie was and how great the book was.  She said “There is no kung fu kicks and all the silly stuff the movie had.”  Well that makes sense it was a Disney and what says Disney more than corny, goofball movies. :)

It took we a little while to get into the book…I read a few minutes a couple days and then didn’t pick it up again for a couple weeks.  It is definitely an easy read.  So once I sat down and read it I was done with it in a few hours.

Right away I could see how much was left out of the book and how much it was turned into a goofy fairytale.  The story is really “Cinderella” in more depth, more back story.  With the added twist that she was cursed into having to do everything she was told.

Well just incase anyone else wants to read I won’t go into detail about what exactly happens.  It definitely could have been a better movie and still been fun for kids. It was a fun read to fill in the gap while I wait for Brisingr.  :)

Eventually… September 7, 2008

Filed under: Uncategorized — Brandy Young @ 11:15 pm

the upper tabs will be actual pages with things the kids like and what not.

When I get around to doing that it will be really cool! :)

~~~~~~~~~
I asked them…
“What are you going to do with that?”
They answered…
“We don’t know yet…but we’ll see.”
Just ahead of them is a small pool of water they planned on using the log to cross.
When they got to it they realized they could just jump over it.
I didn’t get a picture of him but as we were leaving Corbin picked it up and thought he would bring it home with us…yeah……………..no thanks. LOL!
