I have been blogging about this on my other blog…
So I decided to do a post here, to show what the kids have been watching and seeing.
I found a Tiger Swallowtail Caterpillar Wednesday, September 10th. I really wanted the kids to see it so I brought it home. Of course the kids thought it was so cool! They were even more excited to find out that it would soon be making a chrysalis and we would get to watch it!

The following day it had attached itself to the lid of the terrarium but for a couple days it did nothing else. I was beginning to wonder if it had died. I have never seen the process so I had no idea what to expect.

This morning I went out to check on it and it still look like it did in the above pics. We went and spent some time at Fain Park catching tadpoles and walking around. Then came home and napped. I decided to go out and check on the caterpillar again and immediately I saw something insect like on the floor of the terrarium.

I had seen pictures of this before so I knew there had been some progress. Sure enough I looked up to see the caterpillar is now in the process of making it’s chrysalis! I called the family out to see and they were all excited to see some change!

Ashlyn said “It looks like wood!” So I explained to her why it looks that way…so with her new knowledge she had to inform the rest of the kids why it looked like wood.

The caterpillar/butterfly can stay in the chrysalis anywhere from 2-24 weeks. Since it is almost fall I am kind of wondering if it will be the latter. We are definitely hoping for a shorter time! Either way it will be so cool to watch this strange alien looking thing turn into a beautiful butterfly!
Next year I am going to order one of those kits that let you watch the whole process…I don’t know what kind of caterpillars you get but it would be really neat to see again!
